2023 Harnish Auto Family Tapps Island Invitational

Horse Race Rules

The Game: The horse race will be a two-man, alternate shot, knock out horse race. The game will be played using USGA stroke play rules of golf.

Method of Play: Teams will play alternate shot with the lower handicap teeing off on one, the higher handicap on hole two, and repeating this through hole 8. Teams that make it to hole 9 will be given the choice of who on the team will tee off.

Scoring: Teams will play alternate shot, recording one score per hole. Cumulative score will be kept by the group’s official. Teams must state their team number and their score after holing out on each hole, ensuring their group’s official has marked their score.

First Cut: After 5 holes, each group will be cut down to 8 teams (16 teams left total). Teams that are tied on the cut line will participate in a chip off on the 5th green.

Second Cut: Scores will be reset after the first cut. Each group will continue separately and play 2 more holes. After 2 holes, a second cut will be made in each group. The second cut will be from 8 to 5 teams (10 teams left total).

Win, Place, Show Round: The final 10 teams will then play the final two holes for “win”, “place”, and “show”. Ties will again be broken by chip off.

Out of Bounds: In this game, all white stakes will be turned into red staked penalty areas that may not be played from. Teams that hit the ball in a red staked penalty area marked by white stakes will find where their ball last crossed into the penalty area, take two club lengths no closer to the hole, and play their next shot with a 1 stroke penalty (i.e. tee shots hit into unplayable white staked penalty areas will then hit shot #3).

Pace of Play: In order to keep up pace of play, teams are instructed to play ready golf. After holing out, the teams should continue to the next hole and tee off when another team can witness their tee shots. When in the fairway, teams are instructed to play when ready, so long as it is safe to do so.

Inside Out Putting: Once all teams have successfully made the putting green or the surrounding area and intend to putt, the official will instruct the closest (or “inside”) team to putt first. Putting by this team will continue until the ball is holed. Balls may be marked on the green but all teams are instructed to be ready to play when it is their turn.

Marking Your Ball: Balls must be marked in a way to easily identify which team it belongs to. Markers will be available to assist in marking balls.

Rulings: All rulings in the group are to be made strictly by the official in the group. These rulings are final. Officials may consult other officials for help if needed.
